<p>A lenda do Galo de Barcelos está associada a um antigo padrão de pedra de Barcelos, de origem desconhecida e que tem em si gravados, em baixo relevo, a Virgem, S. Paulo, o Sol, a Lua e um Dragão de um lado e do outro um Cristo Crucificado, um Galo e Santiago sustentando um enforcado. <br /> Segundo a lenda os habitantes de Barcelos andavam alarmados com um crime que tinha ocorrido e não conseguiam descobrir o criminoso. Certo dia apareceu um peregrino a caminho de Santiago de Compostela e foi de imediato considerado suspeito. Clamou por inocência, mas ainda assim foi condenado à forca. Pediu então, o peregrino, que o levassem junto do juiz que tinha proferido a sentença e este, sentado à mesa de um grande banquete, preparava-se para trinchar um enorme galo assado. O peregrino reafirmou a sua inocência e olhando para o galo que começava a ser trinchado afirmou que era tão certo ele estar inocente como era certo que o galo cantaria quando o fossem enforcar. Todos os convivas presentes se riram da afirmação mas, supersticiosamente, não tocaram no galo. À noite, observaram com espanto que o galo se cobria de penas novas, se levantava e batia asas para cantar com energia. O peregrino foi de imediato libertado e mandado em paz.
